APPLICATION PROCESS FOR INTERNET APPLICATIONS
Applications for the following positions may ONLY be downloaded by clicking the link at the end of the job requirements. Please complete the application online and print it; if you do not have available internet access or the ability to print the application, you may visit any branch of the Lafayette Public Library System to use the public computers. Only U.S. citizens and non-citizens authorized to work in the United States by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service are eligible for employment by the Lafayette Consolidated Government. The deadline may be found at the top of the front of the application. Applications will not be accepted after the posted deadline. Applications must also include an original signature. Residents who live in the Lafayette area must turn-in their applications at the Civil Service office. If you live outside the Lafayette area, a copy of the required information must accompany the application before it is accepted.

In order for an application to be accepted, the following items are required at the time the application is turned in.
 
  • Proof that the applicant is 18 years of age or older and has permission to work in the United States issued by the Department of State if not a citizen, and has submitted to the Civil Service Office the prescribed completed employment forms of the aforementioned, prior to the deadline for applications.
  • Proof of a social security number. If you do not have your SS card, an official document with number printed on it will be accepted. (Ex: W-2, etc.)

    The following item may be turned in at any time before the test is given.

  • Proof of veteran status; DD214. You must show proof of having served 90 consecutive days of active duty and show proof that you were honorably discharged. Any one showing proof will be awarded five points to a passing grade.
  • Deadlines are strictly enforced, your application form with items 1 and 2 listed above must be submitted to the Civil Service Office before both date/time and maximum number of applications stated on the ad or announcement of the vacancy.

Title Wage Department

LABOR FOREMAN III $16.37-$20.46/Hour/DOE LUS–Wastewater Collection
Organize, oversee, and plan the daily activities of crew(s) of equipment operators and utility repairmen involved in work to construct, repair, and/or maintain city-parish wastewater collection system. Positions will personally oversee projects requiring a high degree of specialized skill or will direct the work of several crews. Foreman participates in work as needed. Completion of high school and considerable experience in the maintenance, repair, and minor construction of wastewater collection system of municipal facilities, including some lead worker experience at the level of Labor Foreman II; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of Class IV Wastewater Collection certification issued by the State of Louisiana, within three years of appointment. Minimum of possession of Class D (Chauffeur’s license) required prior to appointment. Examination will be a written test. WASTEWATER PLANT OPERATOR $14.49-$18.12/Hour/DOE LUS-Wastewater Treatment
Treats municipal wastewater to environmental standards for effluent, by operating large, complex, partially automated treatment plants. Reviews conditions of machinery, facilities and biological processes. Acts as required to ensure effluent meets coliform, chlorine and other limits, and to control odors. Receives chemical and supply deliveries. Should be comfortable with working at heights, climbing stairs, tolerating odors, and using a tractor and bush hog to maintain grounds. 12-hour rotating schedule with alternating days/nights. Work is potentially hazardous. Technical courses related to stationary electric motors and pumps, and/or introductory life sciences; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Apprenticeship may be required. High School Diploma or GED required. Must be capable of responding to the site within one hour of being notified. Positions in this class may be assigned to an apprenticeship as defined by Civil Service Rule IV, Section 6. This requires the employee to complete initial and ongoing training requirements as established by Lafayette Utilities System with six (6) years of continued employment, including the obtainment of Class IV Wastewater Treatment certification administered by the State of Louisiana, Dept. of Health and Hospitals. Examination will be a written test. Accepting the first 30 completed applications until Friday, August 14, 2020 at noon.

LINEMAN I $17.44-$21.81/Hour/DOE LUS
Position is responsible for assisting in installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead or underground electrical distribution lines and related components of the municipal electrical distribution system. Position is subject to 24-hour call and work is sometimes hazardous. Graduation from high school, knowledge of basic electrical principles, and experience related to the maintenance and installation of electrical distribution equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Valid driver’s license needed to apply. Must have a valid Louisiana driver’s license upon appointment. Must obtain Louisiana Class A CDL license during the working test period (first six months). Positions in this class may be assigned to an apprenticeship as defined by Civil Service Rule IV, Section 6, which requires completion of initial and ongoing training requirements as established by Lafayette Utilities System within two years for continued employment. Exam will be a written test. Accepting the first 30 completed applications until Friday, August 7, 2020 at noon.

JUVENILE DETENTION ATTENDANT I $9.89-$12.37/Hour/DOE CAO
Monitors detainees at the Juvenile Detention Home. High school graduation or equivalent and some experience working with and supervising juveniles; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Position may work 12-hour day or night shift. Background checks will be conducted. Current position open is in the male dorm, but females are encouraged to apply for possible future vacancies in the female dorm. Positions in this class may be assigned to an apprenticeship as defined by Civil Service Rule IV, Section 6. This requires the employee to complete initial and ongoing training requirements for direct care workers as established by the Department of Children and Family Services within one (1) year for continued employment. Examination will be a written exam. Accepting the first 30 completed applications until Friday, August 7, 2020 at noon.

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR IV $14.52-$18.15/hour/DOE  
Position is primarily responsible for the SKILLED operation of a Gradall, Excavator, Bulldozer, Backhoe and Tandem Dump Truck. Depending on area of assignment, may also operate other heavy equipment. Applicants must be able to independently operate the equipment. Work of this class is distinguished from that of Equipment Operator III by the type of equipment operated, the skill level required by the job assignment, and the frequency of operation of the assigned equipment. Graduation from high school and experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment similar to those types listed herein, including some experience in precision work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrake and combination endorsements as issued by the State of Louisiana. Applicants must have at least a valid Commercial Driver’s License or CDL permit to apply and test, but must obtain a Louisiana class A CDL with endorsements, prior to appointment. Certain positions in this class are assigned to an apprenticeship as defined by Civil Service Rule IV, Section 6. This requires the employee to complete initial and ongoing training requirements established by the Public Works Department, Drainage Division, within two (2) years for continued employment Examination will be a performance test mostly on the Excavator, Gradall and Bulldozer, but will include the Backhoe and Tandem Dump Truck. Accepting the first 10 completed applications until Monday, July 13, 2020 at noon, or until filled.
